Plus a few extra

Before you start a session or a chapter of therapy the below could help you get the most out of it.

A chapter of therapy being finding a therapist, having an assessment and agreeing to work together for x-number of hours.

A session being 50+ minutes of focused time working with your therapist.

  1. What kind of relationship/support do I want?
  2. How do I feel? aka What’s going on in my internal world?
  3. How do I want to feel? aka What do I want to be going on in my internal world?

Bonus question: What’s getting in the way?

What kind of relationship/support do you want?

Therapy can be deeper, harder, softer, focused, open, almost anything you want depending on the therapist you choose. Please know I’m writing from my perspective and that of a few therapists I know well. Not all therapists will be willing or able to meet you where you want to be met.

Do you want a supportive relationship? Do you want someone who will open the session for you and allow you to go with your instincts or would you prefer someone set a task or some curated questions?
